Musical Minds Get Ahead

The arts are frequently considered optional during the typical school day, but new research shows that music education can be key for brain development . Neuroscientists at Northwestern University found connections between music and learning and demonstrated that the mental processes associated with musical training are also central to auditory learning and memory. Previous research shows a link between music and reading in that the ability to remember and distinguish sounds also connects to visual processing. An initiative by the Harmony Project, a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, provides instruction and mentoring to budding musicians to evaluate the effect of music on learning.
